My biggest complaint is that this book is almost completely lifted, word-for-word, from the more complete companion "NEW ZEALAND" guide by Lonely Planet. Here and there, there are a few extra items, but don't waste your money on this book if you have, or plan to buy, the larger book that also contains the North Island. The only reason to buy this book is if you are ONLY touring the South Island. I will try to get my money back from Amazon for this book, as I bought both, thinking I'd get a lot more detail on the South Island here. I think they should disclose the duplication in the description, so you don't buy both books as I did. The other issue with both books is that the large fold-out map is inferior to most of the other guide books. It has little detail of smaller roads, and many of the roads it does have are not labeled with route numbers or names. Prepare to buy a separate good quality map if you buy either of these books. Once you get into the details provided, its a pretty good guide. One other thing: there's a strong bent towards backpackers. If you're a senior citizen using hotels and motels, you may get more of what you need from other guides.
