I work with Varnish every day and I hope we might buy a bunch a give to people we train or hire.I don't think the author properly understands how Varnish should be used. There is advice in here which is pretty bad shows the authors lacking experience. A random example on the page I have open is how the author tells how to add a cookie to a the hash in order to create user specific caching but fails to mention the extreme complications this has for cache invalidation.On the next couple of pages the author talks about "bans" - without even mentioning smart bans. Flipping through "load balancing" I get a novel and completely wrong explanation for what the DNS director does.Stick with the freely available docs or "The Varnish Book" (also free). More effort has been put into these than this piece of garbage.
This book is great to get your feet wet in varnish, with some great tips on caching to improve your ratios. Worth a read for beginners.
It's recomended for beginers on the path to use the amazing varnish to create a awesome cache layer in your web application.That's because the book give an overview about writing VCLs with good materials to start from.
A very good piece of documentation to get through Varnish cache capabilities with clear examples of real needs and solutions. It is good both as a reference and as a beginners tutorial.
Overall, this is a solid and short (only 56 pages) guide for anyone who has no-to-minimal experience with Varnish.Note:It does expect some knowledge of the HTTP protocol.Pros:Beginners should get enough information to understand how to bootstrap their first installation and achieve most basic needs, without being intimidated by the man pages or the vcl language.Intermediate users should still benefit from a deeper understanding of Varnish routines, default behaviors, and considerations that should be made when running it in front of a dynamic web site.Cons:Intermediate users will likely finish this book in under an hour and will be wishing for more.
