I must say that I was quite biased while reading this book since I had the luck to visit the show based upon this book (Il etat un fois Disney) which was oh so grand. I guess I expected more visual reference -though the book has many pictures- somehow it comes short at what the show was so successful in transmitting: the many ways -distinctive and subtle- in which the artists' European backgrounds influenced Disney's approach to depicting fantasy. Allan's research is thorough and amazing, but I just didn't feel it did justice to the concept. Though a very interesting subject that may lead to further research for those interested in learning a bit more of the context in which Disney's major works were drawn from, in my opinion. Enjoy!
I bought this book thinking I already knew pretty much all I needed to know about European influences on Walt Disney's fairy tale movies, expecting to add a couple of check marks next to how smart I am. By page five, I knew I should slap my face because "Walt Disney and Europe" is exceptionally well researched and beautifully presented. Thanks, Robin Allan, for taming a bit of my hubris. My note to anybody interested in why Walt Disney made many of the creative choices he did in "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (for starters) Is: You have to have "Walt Disney and Europe". Double check marks.
