Polar: A Photicular Book

From School Library Journal

Gr 3–6—The team that produced Safari (2012) and Ocean (2014, both Workman) this time tackles the polar regions. Dancing penguins, flying snowy owls, and running sled dogs are among the polar animals portrayed in creations called photiculars, or moving, three-dimensional, hologram-esque depictions. Both poles are described and deftly differentiated: the Arctic is an area of permanently frozen ice, while the continent of Antarctica is completely covered by a layer of ice. Chapters include a photicular and brief information on the animal's size, habitat, range, diet, life span, and population. A page of text fleshes out the summary with detailed factual and often entertaining material. For example, male reindeer shed their antlers in November and grow them back them in the spring, but since females keep their antlers through the winter, Santa's reindeer are all females. Threats to each animal are covered, including the effects of global warming. A glowing photicular of the northern and southern lights finishes this sampling of life on the two poles. The readable and enlightening material makes this a worthy addition. However, the fascinating, almost magical illustrations will easily attract enthusiastic readers and the design might prove too fragile for the wear and tear of circulation. VERDICT An intriguing offering for collections willing to take the risk of damage.—Frances E. Millhouser, formerly at Fairfax County Public Library, VA

About the Author

Dan Kainen is an artist, designer, and inventor living in New York City. He is the creator of the bestselling Photicular books Safari, Ocean,Polar, Jungle, and Wild. His website is DanKainen.com.While working with some of the pioneers of holography, Dan created a special spotlight that was used by Soho’s Museum of Holography to light holograms. The related field of holography led to Dan’s interest in lenticular art and, in turn, after nearly a decade of research and experimentation, to the creation of his “Motion Viewer,” his third patent in that field and the inspiration for Safari and the other Photicular books.

These books are amazing. They are for all ages. When you turn the pages and see the animals move it is awe inspiring. I bought four of these.I personally like the POLAR one best but you can't go wrong with SAFARI or OCEAN or any of them. The stories accompanying the pictures will need to be read to the little ones as they require some advanced reading skills but I am sure my 11 year old granddaughter can handle it. Buthonestly I could look at them all day myself. People are so clever and creative.

Okay, for those of you who've not seen these, they are a MUST have for kids of all ages. I gave this to my grandson, age 3, and he just loved looking at the pictures. My granddaughter, who is 12 wanted to know why she didn't get one, instead, she read to him. These books are the BEST.

I am a school bus driver. One of my students brought one of these books on the bus. She showed it to me. I thought these were the coolest books ever! So, I bought all 3 for my granddaughters birthday. She loves to read, and loves animals! And she loved all 3 of these books! They are amazing with the motion!!!! I would recommend these 3 books for kids/grandkids who love to read, look at animals!!!

I purchased this book for my 4 year old grandson because of the "moving" pictures of animals. He is fascinated by sea creatures so I thought he would enjoy watching these animals "move". The book is also fairly sturdy, so he can look at it by himself without damaging it. I was happy with this purchase.

This is intended as a gift for my granddaughter who's birthday is in a few weeks. So I don't know her reaction. However, I saw one of these books in the gift shop of the Phillips Museum in DC and just loved it. When I went online to buy it, I saw there were three books so I bought them all. I love them, if that counts!

These books are magical! We love the super cool pictures when reading them. They are hard cover and will last a long time in our book collection and are equally enjoyed by the kids as they are the adults. I have purchased one of every title, it's a great collection to have. Highly recommend as gifts or to add to your own unique book collection.

A great book. All of the books in this series are fantastic. They look like little movies, and without a tablet or other electronic device.

3-D-like moving images as you open each page. It's very clever how they do it. It's like having a small gif moving image on each page.
