About the Author
Sr. Susan Helen Wallace, FSP, (1940-2013) was a Daughter of St. Paul for fifty years. She held master's degrees in theology and journalism and was a prolific writer. This book is published by Pauline Books and Media and is intended for children ages 5-7. It is also a compilation of the six volume series, "Little Book of Saints." In this book, you and your child(ren) will discover 60 saints spanning the entire history of the Church. In this book, your child will find saints they recognize, i.e., Sts. Mary, Joseph, Nicholas, Benedict, and Paul. They will also find saints they might never have the chance to hear about i.e., Sts. Sharbel Makhluf, Pedro de San Jose Betancur, Paul Miki. Each saint chapter spans two pages. On the first page, your child gets their biography, when they lived, where they lived, their feast day, and a short one line prayer addressed to the saint. On the second page is a full color picture of them with a key object associated with the saint. For example, St. Peter is shown with the Key to the Kingdom.I love reading about the lives of saints, and I believe it is very important to not only make sure your children hear and read Scripture, but also about hear and read about the Saints. They are excellent role models for your children to aspire to emmulate, and they are also great intercessors for your children and their prayers. What I like the most about this book is the variety of saints from different centuries and different countries. What I dislike the most about this book is the organization. There is none. I wish this book would have been organized chronologically either by when the saints lived or by how the specific saint's feast day falls in the Church calendar. For this reason, I am giving this book 4 out of 5 stars.
I love this book! Wanted a book of Saints for my 3 year old. Other books feature archaic art or language and are too difficult to distill to something she can understand. This book is fantastic. Beautiful illustrations, simple language which doesn’t go into graphic detail but also doesn’t skirt around the fact that some saints have died for the faith, and a neat little box on the side featuring key info make this a fantastic book. I love the variety as well—I believe there are around 60 saints featured.
I have looked for years for a saint book suitable for toddlers and preschoolers. My Golden Book of Saints was the closest thing I could find, but it isn't very comprehensive, and while we have a whole stack of various children's saint books that I do like a lot, most of them are geared more towards the K-2 crowd. This book is just what I was looking for. It contains stories of about 60 various saints that span from the time of Christ to the 20th Century and everything in between (it's a very nice variety and balance of new and old, really). The book is hardcover, about 5x7 inches and each saint has his or her own two-page spread, with a full-color illustration on one side, and a short (5-7 sentence) story of their life and prayer or "tip" on the other. There is also a colored box containing the saint's biographical information (years lived, country born and feast day) on each page. These stories are written very simply with short, to the point sentences and easy to understand words. I have already used it with the kids (5 and 3) on the Feast of St. Joseph and definitely got a positive response from them. The only thing I wasn't overly fond of was this book's organization. The saints are in a random order, as is the index (it is just a list of the saints in the same order they appear in the book), so it makes it really hard to find the story of a particular saint. I think I will type all the saints/page numbers into an Excel spreadsheet and alphabetize them though, so it's a simple fix to the problem. All in all I would definitely recommend this book if you are looking to share the stories of the saints with your very young children. It would make a neat gift for a Feast day or Baptismal anniversary.
The text in this book is quite simplistic, good for very young children, but too simple and brief for my sons, 3 and 5. The illustrations are very basic and I don't feel like they added much. My children listen while we read to them, they are capable of understanding much more than these provide in the way of vocabulary, detail, and ideas. I returned this book in favor of a book written for older children.
