I am very fond of this series of novels, partly because the author does not romanticize the Middle Ages, a brutal time in Western history. The main characters are so well drawn and complex I await each new novel to see how they have grown as people. The author's sympathy for the poor, expressed through Brother Athelstan as he intersects with people of all classes and the difficulty in determining how to resolve extreme income inequality is done with great care. The book takes place in the context of a burgeoning peasant rebellion, a rebellion which was was both very medieval and had modern overturns. The history and politics do not overwhelm the plot of the mystery but enhance it.

As the Peasants Revolt nears, various threads that have endured through all the Brother Athelstan books come together. This time, Brother Athelstan and Coroner Cranston investigate the death of lady Isolde who has been executed by being burned to death for murdering her husband. But did she do it? Her husband was an extremely wealthy former soldier who, during his travels in Greece, came into possession of the mysterious Book of Fires. This book contains the secret of making fire that will adhere to whatever it is thrown upon and is impossible to put out with water. Its value in war is incomparable. After his death, the book disappears. As Athelstan and John Cranston become more involved, various people who had anything to do with Isolde's conviction for her husband's murder are themselves murdered by having Greek Fire thrown on them and ignited. In the meantime, a true miracle seems to have occurred at Brother Athelstan's church which results in an influx of strangers and worshipers from different areas. Brother Athelstan doubts that this is a true miracle, but is unable to disapprove it. During all this, the Upright Men continue to conspire and plan what will be the Peasants Revolt. In a foretaste of what is to come, Greek Fire is leveled at John of Gaunt's flotilla and nearly destroys it. Brother Athelstan and Coroner Cranston both become targets for immolation by Greek Fire and it becomes crucial to find the murderer, the book and stop once and for all these multiple immolations. In his usual masterful style, Paul Doherty weaves together the various strands to solve, through logical deduction, the murders and mysteries. This wonderful series seems to be nearing a conclusion. I strongly recommend these fascinating books to anyone who is the least bit interested in medieval history, particularly the 1300s. Doherty's strong writing style and incredible talent for vivid description make this a delightful book to lose yourself in.

Paul Doherty has written more mystery series of historical sleuths than many other authors have written single titles so he can be forgiven for forgetting which protagonist he has written about this once. Although all the Friar Althestan novels are written against the immenient rebellion of the Upright Men, they also include the warm, paternal , and often humorous relationships with his idiosyncratic parishioners and the incorrigible Coroner Cranston. These levening interchanges were sorely missing in this book. Doherty began with an intriguing plot but it soon became obvious who was the major villian in the piece. The "mysterious" hint Sir Walter gave to the location of the Book of Fires was so clear Athelstan should have been flipping through its pages within a day. Athelstan also spends a lot of time interviewing and re-interviewing the same people with no positive results to the point of tedium. The author reserved most of his talents in the description of citizen unrest, combat, and some truly gruesome deaths by incineration. The story ends abruptly with a several loose ends dangling, the better to entice you to the next installment. Given Doherty otherwise stellar track record, I'll looking forward to a much better outing next time. I recommend this book if only so you can enjoy the next one.

Enjoyed reading this book. I also read the Candle Flame and the Straw Men. I should have given it a five. It was my fault that I read the books out of order, but you should check the order of all of this series. Then go ahead and read them all, especially if you love mysteries from this time period

Doherty's earliest books combine history, mystery and a marvelous cast of characters to make several books which were both intriguing and charming. His later books in this series seem to lean heavily on almost formula mystery plots with repetitious descriptions (from earlier books in the series) of London street scenes. Very much missing is most of the marvelous cast of characters and they are almost perfunctory when brought in. The wonderful charm is gone, leaving merely a puzzle. Disappointing.

I found this book to be more interesting than the previous book, Candle Flame. I do miss the quirky parishioners who hardly appeared in this book.Normally I can guess the murderer in a few chapters, this book kept me guessing longer. I was switching back and forth between who could have done it.I'm not sure how many more of these books I will purchase. The price is becoming to high for a Kindle book. I may rely on my library system to get the book, or just skip the rest of the series.

My favourite mystery to date. For lots of reasons, mainly the writing device of not meeting a main character, but learning about her through witness reports and stories only. The Ignifer is a terrifying killer and the Greek Fire captures the imagination. I love how this story takes you beyond Medieval Britain and to Europe. I will probably re read this again. Just for the plot twists!

Another great read by a favourite author. I have read all of the Brother Athelstan/Crowner John books and am always impressed with not only the main story but the back stories as well. The characters are well conceived and sympathetic, despite the mischief they seem to get involved in. And, I love the way the relationship between the two main protagonists has evolved over the course of the series. Can't wait for the next one.
