The Sweeper: A Buddhist Tale, by Rebecca Hazell

From School Library Journal

Gr 1–3—The sweeper in this brightly painted picture book is Padme, an orphaned servant girl in ancient India. Bored with her chores and disillusioned at a tender age, Padme wants more from life than the demands of her perfectionist master and mistress. A visit from the Buddha changes nothing and yet everything. Padme's physical circumstances are never altered—she remains the palace sweeper throughout her adult life, marries the gardener, and has two children. However, Padme's internal dialogue and attitude are transformed by the Buddha's recommendation to view sweeping as a daily act of meditation. A newfound fondness for her work endears Padme to her masters, who in turn treat her better. The Buddha visits Padme once more in her adulthood, and at her request teaches the community a chant to bring happiness and end suffering. Hazell's text is simple and clear, and passages featuring the Buddha's gentle instructional lectures on meditative breathing and chanting are particularly strong. The story holds up better than the watercolor illustrations, which while beautiful, delicate, and cheerfully colored, comprise predictable clusters of stiffly modeled figures. The painted tableaux appear costumed and posed rather than living and breathing, and characters lack dynamism and variety in facial features and expression that could have aided story development and prompted reader investment in the fate of Padme and her community. VERDICT This instructive story based on Buddhist tradition is a welcome addition to any collection in need of a primer in meditation practices and mindfulness.—Lauren Younger, New York Public Library

A wonderful story for children

This charming book clearly and simply teaches children the basic tenets of Buddhism. Servant girl Padme has the good fortune to meet the Buddha, and is given a simple mantra. She learns about mindfulness, impermanence and compassion, and her life blossoms in spite of her lowly position. Beautiful illustrations.

The Sweeper - A Buddhist Tale, is the story of a young girl named Padme who meets Buddha while she is sweeping her master’s courtyard. She tells him she is unable to meditate because she does not have the time due to her chores. He gives her a simple mantra, ‘sweep and clean’ that introduces her to a mindfulness practice. This book is a wonderful introduction to meditation for children, and even those who find Buddhism mystical, and meditation unattainable. The story is easily relatable, making the philosophy of mindfulness more accessible and easy to understand. Padme also learns the power of compassion, kindness and generosity and how to embrace the simple things in life and to find joy in her daily activities. The story is beautifully illustrated with vibrant colours and characters that draw the reader into Padme’s world, making what may be unfamiliar to many, feel warm and welcoming.

There are not a lot of books that we come across that talk about Buddhism. I was instantly intrigued by The Sweeper, a new book written and illustrated by Rebecca Hazel, that illustrates the importance of mindfulness.Inspired by Buddhist tradition, this original story tells how Padme, a young servant girl, meets the Buddha as she is sweeping her master’s house. When she laments that she is so busy that she would never have time to meditate, the Buddha gives her the instruction to “sweep and clean.” This simple mindfulness practice transforms Padme’s life, and when she encounters the Buddha many years later, he teaches her how to send compassion out to others.Mindfulness is an exceptionally important concept for children and adults alike. It is the practice of focusing on what is going on with you in the present moment rather than letting your mind wander to the past or the future. We are living in such a fast-paced world that it is very easy to get wrapped up in the responsibilities that we all face and to never allow the mind time to just be. Just sitting in the quiet and taking in the beauty around you is a pastime that we seem to have given up. Whether homework, housework, rushing to the next activity, or the constant media coming at us, being mindful is something that is getting harder and harder. The Sweeper tries to show people how they can get more joy from their lives if they allow themselves to be fully present. Padme felt that she was always being criticized for not doing a good enough job of sweeping her masters' home. She was glad to have a job and home, but she felt empty, yearning for an unnamed greatness. When the Buddha comes to visit, he explains how meditation could help us train our minds to see and accept our truths. Since Padme felt she never had a moment to rest, she felt that she could never find a way to meditate, but this is where the Buddha truly helped her. He found a way for her to be more present in her work and to allow her sweeping to be her meditation.I think that this book is a wonderful way to get people thinking about being "in the moment." While we might not all take the time out of our day to practice yoga or sit and meditate, turning off our technology, taking the time to listen to one another, and appreciating the beauty of all that surrounds us is a truly beautiful way to live. Additionally, there are many around us who quietly practice Buddhism and finding a book that honors their practice is a great addition to a diverse library.** Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to review a digital copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Completely delightful children's book. My 6 yo grand is going to love it.

Such a lovely, sweet, and touching story. Very real topics of life that modern culture tends to shy away from come up: aging, death and grief. The metta prayer at the end is the perfect antidote.
