The issue of citizen engagement, especially as encouraged and (theoretically) amplified by social media and other new technologies, is not new. It's been around for quite awhile. (I published a book on cable TV's potential for stimulating engagement in 1977, and I wasn't the first.) In Citizenville, published a couple years back, former SF mayor Gavin Newsom examines the issue once again and proposes methods for achieving a more citizen-centric society in America.Unfortunately, the once-sophisticated methods expressed in the book have already fallen behind the rough trade of bare-knuckles Trumpism in terms of motivating citizens, not necessarily in productive directions but with a lot more soul power than the technologized methods that Newsom advocates. From experience, I know how much of current technologism is for show, and how much actually is translated into active systems. Not much. That Newsom is still enthusiastic about the possibilities is endearing. He really does care.The book has the flavor of a ghost-written volume, perhaps because it is. There's a second name on the cover and she obviously had a lot to do with the book's formulation and its writing. No matter, Citizenville is an interesting signpost on the way to a proposed future that's quite a lot like the present today. Worth a read, to see what progressive politicians for whom the people are an ally, not an enemy, are hoping for. I hope they/we find it.

First thing: this review is not of Gavin Newsom as Mayor, Lt. Governor, or Plumpjack entrepreneur. This is a review of a wonderfully written, easy to read, book about how the internet, Facebook, Twitter, apps, etc. (in other words digital technology), offers hope to us all. This premise could not be more timely. Our governments, from local to state to federal, lack not only the money but the ability to solve so many of our problems. Additionally, ordinary peoples' voices are being drowned out by special interests. Innovation and participation by these same ordinary people, i.e. citizens, i.e. all of us who care about something, is our hope for the future. And the future is now!Don't be fooled that this book will be over your head, or filled with jargon, or with idealistic rhetoric. This book is for you, about you! Keep reading the book if you doubt me. Because despite the title being about how to reinvent government, Citizenville is more about real life stories of real people who are making a difference and who can help you make a difference about something YOU care about, whether it is fixing the pothole in YOUR street, improving YOUR park, addressing YOUR public safety concerns or funding a teacher in YOUR child's or grandchild's school. Each story or essay begins with an idea. Citizenville is coined from the gaming sensation Farmville. The fact that people will spend considerable time and money playing virtual games leads to the premise that the same model could be used to get people to do actual, real things in their community when given the same incentive, ie. the competitive spirit. But the book quickly moves to other ideas, each explored with quotes from a myriad of people from technology gurus to public figures. And each idea is followed by an anecdote of the real life application of the idea. Gavin Newsom is completely forthcoming about the drawbacks of some of the supposed fixes to government or problems. But he is relentless in his belief that our lives, starting at the local level, can be improved despite government, despite the scarcity of resources and despite the lack of political will. And after hearing about so many websites that have already changed lives and re-engaged people, you cannot finish this book without feeling hopeful for the future. I closed the book and started to log into websites mentioned in the book. My last thought? How will I keep up with all these new sites and innovations? I am left wanting an email newsletter follow-up; when the next great site like Donorschoose goes up, I do not want to be the last to know!

I would say it's really about using social media and technology to modernize all governments, starting with local governments.Gavin is outstanding. I love this book! He is right on the money about Government still at v1.0 while society is at v2.0.He champions what Alvin Toffler does: That we are in the "3rd wave", but our government and constitution are still in the Industrial wave (2nd wave). So he outlines various creative ways that people have "taken over" and just did things for themselves. And it not helps those doing it, but the local government as well. Everyone benefits. So he champions an open society where we can access any government data they have. He shows how the government has so much data that they don't know what they really have or what to do with it. So others have discovered what to do with it and benefited many people. And it didn't cost the government one cent.However, from a pure writing standpoint (I'm a writer), writers and editors these days seem to make the same mistakes and do the same things that aren't really "mistakes," but just plain "not good". Like spelling out all numbers: "Three hundred and fifty thousand" instead of "350,000", or "twenty-first century" instead of "21st century". They way overuse em-dashes instead of putting parenthetical statements inside parenthesis, use commas where they are not needed, don't put commas where they are needed, make really long run-on sentences instead of breaking it up into two sentences, like ", but ..." instead of ". But ...", and so on.They must all get their training from people who are out of touch and have never been peer-edited themselves. [But there must be a good editor around somewhere!]
