Review

"Part travelogue, part parenting manual . . . this book aims to assist pilgrims and parents on their own journey of faith. . . . In truth, there is only one person who ever had authentic faith. What makes the sainted heroes about whom Belcher writes untrivial is their struggle with Jesus Christ and their growth in his likeness. His faithfulness to them is what liberates them from the tedium of being a good example." (Thomas W. Currie, The Presbyterian Outlook, February 17, 2014)"In Search of Deep Faith is an engaging, informative journey into the lives, times and significance of heroes of the Christian faith. Their stories of sacrifices and devotion to God will inspire worship leaders to more passionately lead others in worship." (Jeff Friend, Worship Leader Magazine, March/April 2014)"In Search of Deep Faith . . . points us through many stories to the one answer in Christ. It invites us to pilgrimage together in a life of faith, risk, and, above all else, to know God better. The cloud of witnesses have gone before us, lived out deep faith, and finished the race. We are on a journey to do the same, and this book is a welcome companion for the way." (Steve McKoy, The Gospel Coalition Book Reviews, February 2014, thegospelcoalition.org/book-reviews)"In Search of Deep Faith creates a love for courageous Christians of history, connects these discoveries to the challenges of today's world, and charts a course through the European continent that I would love to trek." (Paul Atwater, "The 2014 Leadership Book Awards," Leadership Journal, Winter 2014)"In his new book, Belcher expands upon the idea of deep church, investigating the sources of modern doubt and skepticism and sharing examples of Christian witness. In Search of Deep Faith helps readers discover just that: a faith with the power to carry through the ages and still convict our hearts today." (Relevant, September-October 2013)"'Come and see' is always and everywhere the invitation to the truest learning, and Jim Belcher is a remarkably gifted teacher, drawing young and old, believer and skeptic, into his own pilgrimage. Allowing us the unusual grace of seeing over his shoulder and through his heart as he leads his family into the stories of the people and places that have shaped his own soul, Belcher asks the honest questions about life and the world that we all ask, and answer. I want everyone I know and love to read In Search of Deep Faith, learning from Dr. Belcher about the things that matter most. A Pilgrim's Progress for the twenty-first century." (Steven Garber, The Washington Institute, author of The Fabric of Faithfulness)"Equal parts pilgrimage memoir, parenting book, theological reflection and biography collection, In Search of Deep Faith takes you on a particularly fascinating journey. That combination might sound strange, but it totally works, allowing us to view historical authors, theologians, artists and dissidents through the eyes of the author and his family, and to reflect on theological anchor points as if we were traveling with them." (Mark Oestreicher, partner, The Youth Cartel)"A generation that desires to be 'radical' needs to be reminded that the word actually means 'rooted.' Jim Belcher's beautifully written family adventure through Europe provides an accessible, and touchingly personal, introduction to our Christian roots and church history. He reminds us that if we think we've seen farther, it's only because we stand on the shoulders of giants." (Skye Jethani, author of With and Futureville)"Jim Belcher's intimate portrayal of his family's year-long journey through Europe reminds us that it is in life's pain, suffering and trials that we discover beauty, and its Creator." (Daniel A. Siedell, author of God in the Gallery)"Winston Churchill famously said, 'The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see.' My friend Jim Belcher points the way forward by taking us on a compelling journey back through time and place in search for the ways in which the Christian faith has impacted the world, transformed people and shaped cultures. The fruit of Jim's year-long pilgrimage throughout Europe, In Search of Deep Faith is a personal, probing and provocative adventure into the robust realism of the Christian faith. Highly recommended." (Tullian Tchividjian, senior pastor of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church and author of One Way Love)

This is a family-travelog/spiritual-biography-of-some-of-the-author's-heros-of-the-faith book. The author and his family take a year-long trip through Europe in order to spiritually recuperate. They travel to different locations that are related to people who had a deep faith (or can teach us something about a deep faith). Each chapter contains a story about the family's travel experience interspersed with spiritual biographical material on a particular person (Lewis, Bonhoeffer, Maria von Trapp, etc.). Each chapter also has a spiritual lesson for having a deep faith. It sounds messy, but the author pulls it all off very nicely. I've only rated the book three stars because I don't like travelogs and I don't like biographies. Despite that, finishing this book wasn't a chore for me, which says something good about the book.

I love this book so much! I used it as a source for my Holocaust paper — the sections on Corrie ten Boom and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. I had come across this title through a YouTube video by the author, which my Religious Studies professor had shown us in class a while back. And I love how the author alternated between the martyrs' stories and his family's journey to learn more about them.

This is one of the best books I've ever read. I shared the story and the book with many friends. They live their lives with such intentionality. A great book for young adults starting a family!

Jim Belcher's book In Search of Deep Faith: A Pilgrimage into the Beauty, Goodness, and Heart of Christianity is one of those special books. Part history book, part travel, part journal, part parenting and marriage book. It has it all.The book follows the Belcher family on a yearlong journey through points in Europe. What was meant to be a sabbatical, turned into a pilgrimage through many of the most important sites in Europe and most important people to the Christian faith. They spent time in Oxford and around England interacting with C.S. Lewis, William Wilberforce and others. Then time with Van Gogh, Le Chambon and finally Corrie ten Boom. They finished their time with Bonhoeffer, the von Trapp family and Heidelberg. As soon as I finished, I passed it off to Katie because the heartbeat of this book is the heartbeat we have with our kids: we want them to have a faith that is alive, that is rooted in Scripture, but also rooted in history. We want them to know the great people of faith who have walked before them. The people who have willingly put their lives on the line to do what God called them to do. Who used their gifts of art to glorify God and point people to Jesus. We don't want them to have a faith that is simply intellectual or regurgitating facts, but one that is alive. One that is rooted in the beauty, goodness and glory of Christianity.I can't recommend this book high enough. It was so good. Bordering on being my book of the year.

One might call this a travelogue because it provides an account of Jim Belcher's family's travels throughout Europe on a year's sabbatical. However, this book not only gives us the usual tourist guide of the buildings and museums visited and descriptions of beautiful and varied scenic views. Belcher also interweaves brief historical vignettes that tell us about the people whose hometowns and significant residences they visit. There is a wide range of people whose lives the family explored in their year, from CS Lewis to Vincent Van Gogh and beyond. That variety of characters provides background for Belcher to develop fascinating little essays that tell us of some of the "back stories" we may not have been familiar with before. When the family traveled to Austria to visit the Von Trapp family home (and take the Sound of Music tour),the account is interwoven with some of the fascinating details of Maria's incredible life that were only partially covered in that now timeless musical. The harrowing details of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's life make a strong backdrop for the educational part of the trip Belcher and his wife want to provide for their four young children. Those children are central to all that Belcher does, and he openly shares his concerns over how the kids are learning and developing their own values and faith foundations. This is a very profound part of the book, but it also led me close to giving this a four instead of a five star rating. My concern is that the telling of these struggles may have breached more of the boys' privacy than is right. These two older children were really not old enough to give fully informed consent to sharing some of the episodes described here (if they were even asked) and I wonder what the impact of all the world knowing so much detail may have on them in the years to come. There is clearly great love and affection on all sides here, but Belcher sometimes seemed to come off too much always in the right and too quick to describe (never earth-shaking) problems his children were dealing with.Still, this is a book that will be valuable to anyone interested in any of the well-known figures the family went hunting for, as well as for history buffs, art and literature fans, and even those with concerns for building lifelong faith and values in their children. Definitely should be on your bookshelf and shared with others.

Very interesting and readable book that delved into many subjects in which I wasn't aware were Christianity related. I thoroughly enjoyed it, purchased copies for others for friends and recommended it to others.
