Wonderful poem. I read this in a 3rd grade poetry contest many years ago. Now I read it to my 5 year old. She loves it. Bought used for great price, book was in almost new condition.
When I was in the eighth grade, my counselor suggested "The Creation" as a selection for me to read in the UIL Oral Reading competition. I didn't win the competition, but I fell in love with the poetry of James Weldon Johnson. I was delighted to see a quality picture-book version of this colorful, winning account of the creation story. Perhaps the most wonderful thing about Johnson's approach is that he makes God appear "personal" rather than "human". His poetry seems to share God's heart, and captivates the reader and listener alike. The story-telling nature of his poems remind me of Rudyard Kipling's "Just So Stories", which I also treasure. I highly recommend this book.
Growing up this was one of my favorite poems. So when I had children it was a must that I have this book. My 22,20,and 4 yrs old Son's have grown to love this book/poem as much as I have!!!
as advertised
This is the most fantastic poem of creation, and the illustrations in the book are magnificent.
I first heard this poem in high school. It made an impression on me then and I was delighted to read it again. The illustrations are lovely!
This is an awe-inspiring poem about The Creation of the World and Man and Woman. It is written in beautiful common language as only James Weldon Johnson can write. The reader can picture vividly the events of Creation with every line of the poem. When I was 12 years old (I am 60 now), I recited this poem in a Recitation Contest at our Junior High School and won first prize. I love the poem just as much now as I did then.
I love this poem by James Weldon Johnson and bought the gift to share it with the children in my church as well as my grandchildren. How wonderful to discover the illustrations used in this edition!
